Certainly, if you want to communicate you should speak to your audience. Your reference to obscure words or jargon does bring up an interesting point. Sometimes ridicule can be the goal. Two dollar words or folksy jargon can both be used to demean members of different classes. There is no question that speech is reflected in writing. Changing gears in different environments can be challenging. The people I know cover a wide spectrum. I think though, that it is a given that everyone's vocabulary and spelling should improve at some rate with age.
