The problem is that what constitutes "the margins" tends to become increasingly narrowly defined, particularly when law enforcement agencies are involved, and history is rife with examples of outrageous over-reach and insufficient oversight.

Exactly. Grave abuses will inevitably occur down the road unless the people are less naive about government, generically, than Ish and Neocon are.

I agree with Neo that "It is idle to pretend that there is no trade- off between security and rules against aggressive policing," but think Ish's and his sentiments are extremely incautious, head-in-the-sand ones. This subject deserves thought and planning, not slogans.

This was back in '94. Now the liberals are squealing about lost rights? I haven't lost any under Bush, have you?
