The appearance of stupidity is, IMO, quite useful for political purposes. I'm sometimes amazed over at the Prez GWB thread here at SI when contributors will actually say that they prefer GWB to Al Gore or the effete (they don't have that word in their vocabulary so I'm helping them out here) liberal intelligentsia. The "aw shucks" act has been played successfully by generation after generation of politicians and con men here in the U.S. A lot of gullible people are more comfortable identifying with leaders that they feel are just like them. Even the double Bubba act of Clinton/Gore had a lot of contrived "down home" characteristics. It's a tradition, doncha know... <g>

So, to refine your question, the appearance of stupidity is contrived, it is intentional and it works. That's why they use the same trick year after year.
