Dave, not down into the 2nd amendment pit again! No, you can't make me go! :)

I do wish that the Supreme Court would ignore politics and straight some things like this out. We spend a lot of time and energy debating, like the argument between 'an' and 'the' in the establishment clause.

I think they are afraid of the consequences of clarity. What would happen if they decided the 2nd amendment did not protect gun rights? That would almost guarantee a constitutional crisis, as the practical implications would be tremendous.

But maybe that is wise. A friend of mine, a UCLA graduate and basketball fanatic, had an opportunity to meet John Wooden at a book signing. Being a basketball coach for his sons junior team, he thought he'd ask Coach Wooden a question. "The kids don't listen. How do you get the kids to do what you want them to do?". His reply: "We all have a tendency to overcoach at all levels".

Maybe the Supreme Court is just trying not to overcoach...
