So what happened in this country in 1954 to cause the words under god to become part of the Pledge of Allegiance? And why was it good enough for us before 1954 without those words? Just wondering.

Noel, I see your reasoning, but that doesn't change my feelings about it. If the government authorities of the 1800's had not had a Christian, or a loving Supreme Being like God, they would not have made our immigration policies so broad that so many undesirables have been able to come here the earn better livings than were available to them in their homeland, and continue to hate the very fiber of America at the same time. I know that is not very well worded, but while diversity can be a good thing, too much of it can be a dangerous thing.
