>From the Syrian viewpoint, Turkey has been pursuing a number of policies calculated to harm and encircle Syria, especially at a time when the latter is involved in delicate negotiations with its zionist arch-enemy under unfavourable strategic, political and diplomatic conditions. Particularly disturbing to the Syrian decision-makers, in this regard, is the rapid expansion of Turco-Israeli security and military cooperation.

There is something going on in the ISraeli cabinet, don't you think?

Yeah, the usual pulling in separate directions, Chinu. An Israeli unity government is anything but unified. Ben Eliezer is trying to establish himself as the head of the Labor party, Peres is trying to save his baby Oslo with one last desperate set of manipulations behind everyone else's back, the Likudniks are pressing for full-scale war now, and Sharon is try to act as master of this three-ring circus. Sharon has been rather clever so far imo, letting Peres and Ben Eliezer have their little victories, but keeping the general direction of affairs in his own grasp.

Hillel Harkin repudiates some of Tom Segev's post-Zionist myths of Zionism. FYI
