the negative savings rate was a piece of the puzzle, not the driver, in and of itself. i'm not one to defend govt statistics, but this would be the first time they fudged the number to make it look worse in the history of govt! -lol- no matter what, though, we are coming out of a period where people saved very little relative to income. there are some explanations for this - refinancing and ballooning stock prices are two major reasons. the balloon is deflating. refinancing can't last forever, either.
