How in blazes do you show the whole of a nation as one unit

You tell me. The country seemed to have found away for 150 years without the pledge, and immigration was far higher (in %0) then than now.

Darleen, I think most people are able to imagine the nation as a whole without a symbol, whether it be a flag or a follicle challenged Eagle or a snake that says "don't tread on me." But I'm not attacking the flag as a symbol. I am saying the pledge is something we got along without for most of our history. Why do we have to have it now? I know most nations have national anthems, but do most have something similar to the pledge for their children to recite? I don't know the answer to that one.
