on condition they could never get the financial benefits Again you jump around in context. The bulk of any financial benefits are private contracts between employers and their employees. The marriage aspect is mostly inertia in the wording of the contracts, where it is changing is that most companies who are trying to attract employees have substituted the idea of domestic partner for spouse. If I remotely supported the government butting into these contracts you would be calling it demo-something interference. TP
