Of all the countries (the PRC and the USSR among others)I've visited the USA is the place where the flag is flown most. Visit any small town or large city and you will see an abundance of flying flags. For starters try 5th avenue in NYC.
The so-called backwards bending you refer to is just old fashioned self interest.
