Part of it is understanding that almost every one of these characters is just playing a role to get the money. The vast majority are just regular people who play a marketing angle to sell records.

Quite true for the most part today, me thinks. During the entire decade of the nineties, I can't think of a single rocker who died choking on his own vomit, (or even someone else's vomit, for that matter). Not like the good old days at all.

On the other hand, remember I mentioned my friend the (music industry) copyright attorney? Well, her very first client -- name unknown to me, but probably along the lines of "Pimp-Daddy-Fill-In-The-Blank" -- paid her original $10,000 retainer in cash.

As in old, small, bills.

As in twenties, tens, fives, and ones, rolled up and held together with rubber bands.

They had to sit down and draft the fellow a cash receipt, then ask a building security guard to accompany the office manager to the bank to deposit the funds. I believe kids today call that sort of thing "keeping it real."

To paraphrase Spinal Tap, that's 'too much bloody reality' for me. <ggg>
