It may be that it was illegal for them to take the cash. That's the scenario I was discussing earlier with doctors. The cash payments are called "private contracts." Those who made the law would say they were protecting you from the hospital charging you for unneeded services. I don't know if that's why the hospital wouldn't take your cash, but it could have been illegal for them to do so.
