re: "Dell to skip Itanium 2 for now"

While I agree this is not good new for Intel, it should be expected. The market for Itanium is still being developed. It is about taking design wins from Sun and converting traditional mini and mainframe business to uP based systems.

Dell is very good at reducing pricing for a volume business through their direct build to order model. They have proven this with the desktop and the department server. As HP, IBM and others develop the market for Itanium you can expect to see Dell enter once volumes begin to ramp.

My guess is that when they first entered Itanium market business conditions in general where much better and they could afford to spend on image with the Itanium.
