>>We support Israel year after year because they are an irritant to any Arabian empire that might be formed. Israel is a "wedge" tactic on the global chessboard.<<

If that's true, and that is strategic American policy, and it is good for America, shouldn't Americans support it?

Although I tend to doubt the central theme--my guess is that Israel's existence has done more to coalesce the Arab world than any other factor possibly could.

I would have to think that Israel has a uniting effect on Arab nations, not a disuniting effect.

A more ready reason is that the US does not want to be seen abandoning allies. Even allies like South Vietnam. Even allies like that postage stamp Taiwan. I have sometimes questioned the geopolitical wisdom of supporting Taiwan, and creating the considerable enmity of the mainland Chinese, with whom we always have uneasy relations. People come back and tell me we cannot abandon our ally, Taiwan. Although they never really have good arguments as to how much safer we are in the world by reason of our Taiwanese posturing. (Do the Taiwanese has a lobby? I've heard of no TAIPAC. They must have something).

And so it goes.
