Here's another way to grasp it:

Think of a large cable TV company - big enough to achieve economies of scale. Caveat - it has to be profitable or at breakeven (and pro forma doesn't count).

Find out how much they charge their subscribers per month.

Then consider that cable TV is a broadcast technolgy whereby a one way signal is sent via repeaters to a number of ethernet segments that all just need to receive the same signal. Contrast that with the addressing and routing needs of two IP traffic where each subscriber is looking at something different, using a multitude of protocols, and doesn't want people looking at their data.
