ork from mork,

I had a chance to look at it tonight. As usual, Microsoft has taken something from previous versions and complicated it beyond comprehension.

When you deselect items in the MSConfig utility, in WinXP it actually works like it it supposed to,it just does not seem so. WinXP reboots to a dialog box that sounds like you did not get a clean boot. If you just cancel out the next two boxes, you will find that your System Tray does not load what you deselected and everything is OK.

Its just that Microsoft describes the boot as not "normal" and you are left with the impression you have screwed it up. If you really want it to be "normal" you have to remove/uninstall what you don't want and then it should boot normally.

In previous OS versions, you just selected/deselected whatever you wanted and didn't get any messages. I guess they call this progress.

I am running this PC on deselected items right now and all is OK.

To add to what Doug said, make sure to put a checkmark in the "Don't show this message..." checkbox to keep from getting the message every time you boot. After opening the System Configuration Utility you will get this message box even if you don't make any changes if you click the "OK" button to close the SCU and restart. Click the cancel button if you don't make any changes and the warning message won't appear.
