"Sprint ... effectively postponed their 3G introduction from July to Aug. 10. On Aug. 10 they will be introducing the so-called 3G products," said Philip Christopher, president and chief executive officer of Audiovox Corp. Sprint, which has not publicly announced a launch date, would not confirm the dates given by Christopher in answer to an analyst's question during a quarterly conference call held to discuss the supplier's earnings. Shares of Sprint PCS, the No. 4 U.S. mobile telephone service provider, were off 46 cents, or 9.7 percent, at $4.27 a share in Tuesday afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange ( news - web sites). Shares of Sprint's FON Group , the No. 3 U.S. long-distance carrier, were down 45 cents, or 4.2 percent, at $10.32. Kaufman Bros analyst Vik Grover said in a research note that while Sprint never provided a launch date, "any delay from a whispered July 4 launch date could lead to another downward revision to guidance" for full-year 2002 net customer additional revenue and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation or amortization. Sprint PCS has said it expects to launch high-speed data service, or third-generation (3G) service, nationwide this summer. Mobile phone companies -- including Sprint -- see the release of high-speed data as key to future revenue growth and competition, as the potential for new mobile voice customers declines and calls become cheaper. Kaufman's Grover said he believes Sprint might push the launch date out by about a month and a half. "We weren't on the call but it's a false assumption to tie in what might be discussed as product delivery dates to the full-fledged launch of Sprint's 3G service," said a Sprint spokesman who would not comment on the launch date aside from saying that the company is still on track for a launch this summer. Audiovox said the high-speed data launch will coincide with its introduction of Thera, a handheld computer with an integrated telephone, for Sprint's next-generation customers. The company also hopes to offer a color display high-speed product via Sprint in the fourth quarter. Shares of Voxx were down 18 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $7.57 in Tuesday afternoon Nasdaq trading
