Message 17685819

I was just in a Sprint "Express" store in my neighborhood that opened up in February. It is called "Express" because it does not offer service, just sales and activation.

I spoke to the manager there - it was his first day on the job. (Seems they got rid of the previous manager. I never knew the store was there, so I am not surprised the old manager got the boot.)

Anyway here is what he said. First, the phones they are selling now are 1X voice only except for two Sanyo models, which are data-enabled (including GPS). The 5150 is a color phone and the 6200 is no color. Of course, they won't work until the data network is lit. He said this is on for mid-August.

Also, I saw later posts about something happening with Sprint around July 4. Maybe July 4 refers to the MIIB promotion. By the way, the store manager said that there was a private showing this past Sunday for Sprint PCS employees (among others?). He was sick so he missed it but he said he wil be getting reports from his staff today. I have his phone number and will call him to get their take on the film.

Final thing is he aasked me how he could get the name of the store in front of the neighborhood more. He definnitely seems like gung ho.

Guess Kaufman Co wanted to create a "buying opportunity."

KF - Incredible. I distinctly remember hopeing that 1X data would get going late last year.

There is nothign to do so we might just as well sit back and wait but the silence from PCS is just deafening. It would make snese to get everyone all lathered up IF the Jo Public knew what 1X was but as part of our attraction is that he actually doesn't know it is logical to assume that he isn't geting lathered up at all only us and soon the PCS and QCOM analysts.

Best,

L

Keith,

<< 100% of all phones in Korea are being shipped with cameras and color screens. >>

Lots of color displays, but VERY FEW camera phones in Korea yet. Camera phones still a Japan phenomenon.

This was Samsung's first IS-95B camera phone (uses the MSM3000), and it is butt ugly and never had wide distribution:

samsungelectronics.com

Samsung introduced its first 1xRTT camera phone model, the SPH-X590, in April and it is pretty cool. It is just now hitting retailers shelves:

samsungelectronics.com

Samsung followed in mid-May may with the introduction of the SCH-V300 1xEV-DO camera phone based on the SPH-X590. The SCH-V300 was initially to be supplied to the SK Telecom IMT-2000 Test Group and available to the general public by end of May for use at the World Cup. So far as I can tell, however, it is not yet available to the general public:

samsungelectronics.com

In late may LGE also introduced the Cyon LG-KH5000 for 1x EV-DO service but it appears that like the SCH-V300 this model may not yet be available to the general public:

lg.co.kr

SKT's plan announced earlier this year for DO product introduction was:

- Feb 2002: Notebook PCMCIA Card for Notebook PC
- May 2002: Non-VOD Handset with 65K Color STN LCD and Camera
- Jun 2002: VOD Handset with 260K Color TFT LCD and Camera
- Aug 2002: Ultra Videophone with Enhanced Display and Large Memory

It appears that they may be running a bit late on the 2nd and 3rd models which may account for the lack of DO publicity at the World Cup

The 3 Korean carriers plan to introduce 3GPP MMS compatible services later this year and Both LGE & Samsung plan to supply them with MMS compatible camera phones. 3GPP2 has an MMS specification in progress and presumably it is modelled on the 3GPP standard, but as of 2 months ago that was not determined.

It is rumored that Samsung will use Nokia's Series 60 Symbian reference design for its GPRS camera phones.

- Eric -

Keith. My theory is that there is a component shortage and mfg capacity shortage. They have had blowout sales of sophisticated phones in Korea and Japan. Color screens and those little cameras or some other component.
