In the spring of 1839, the British marched an expeditionary force of 19,000 troops and innumerable hangers-on into Afghanistan in order to suppress some local war and surreptitiously stop the Russian advance which was, of course, all part of "the Great Game".

By the end of summer, 1841, the remnant of the British forces left Afghanistan. He had quite a few horror stories to share.
