OT: Car & Driver did a comparison on the GTI
in last month's issue, I believe.

If I remember correctly it placed 4th out of 5 cars. Placing 1 and 2 were the Ford Focus SVT and Acura RSX. I just skimmed the article but I believe the reviewers thought the GTI's design is getting a bit old, and it wasn't as fast as its competition. I bought an '85 GTI new and had a blast with it for two years, but it's a bit different car now.

If you're considering a car in that size/class, you might drive those as well before buying.

Speaking of the Audi A4, the new Volkswagen W8 is in the same price class, and something you might consider if you want a German car.
