I'm not saying that I think Israel is right in what they are doing. What I'm saying is that a guaranteed way to make people lose all sympathy with a cause is for the proponents of the cause to start deliberately targeting civilians. I, myself, had a lot more sympathy for the Palestinians before I saw footage of some of them dancing in the streets in celebration of the collapse of the Twin Towers. There are those who say the Palestinians have no choice, because they don't have the money or weapons that the Israelis have. That is simply wrong. They could have had a homeland again a long time ago if they had just adopted the principle of ahimsa. It's how Ghandi beat the British Empire. Martin Luther King may not have completely won his fight, but he certainly brought his people forward a very long way. If he had instead encouraged black people to blow themselves up in crowded marketplaces, how much worse would the plight of black americans be today? If Rosie Parks had blown up a bus, instead of just refusing to move to the back, few people would consider her a hero today. You might say, "Sure, but both Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr. were assassinated." And that is true. But I think that they would have preferred that to the idea of sending hundreds or thousands of young men and women out to die in their places. The biggest difference between ahimsa and jihad is that ahimsa has a proven track record of success. Jihad only prolongs the killing and the pain. - Allen
