IDT's Enhanced Integrated Communications Processors Target Wireless Access Points and Gigabit Ethernet Switching Markets

New Design Center Pioneers Performance Enhancements, Delivers Additional PCI Throughput for New, Emerging Applications

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 2002-- IDT (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.) (Nasdaq:IDTI - News), a leading communications IC company, today announced new versions of its RC32334 and RC32332 integrated communications processors, featuring performance capabilities of up to four times the PCI throughput when compared to the previous device revision. The latest product enhancements strengthen IDT's position as a leading supplier of integrated communications processors for managed Layer 2 Ethernet switches, and enable the company to continue its focus on high-growth communications applications in the Enterprise market, including wireless access points, SOHO gateways and virtual private networks (VPNs). The enhancements also demonstrate IDT's continued investment into its overall design initiatives, and serve as a proof point for its newest design center in Warren, New Jersey. This design center focuses exclusively on expanding IDT's integrated communications processor portfolio, providing system architecture expertise to enhance the product family and enable compelling system performance in customer applications, as well as supporting the pre-silicon verification and post-silicon validation tasks.

"The PCI bus continues to be an important connectivity standard for designers targeting cost-conscious enterprise and SOHO applications, and IDT has established a strong position as a supplier of silicon solutions that enable the development of an extremely cost-sensitive, PCI-enabled subsystem," said Ian Ferguson, strategic marketing manager for IDT's Internetworking Products Division. "A key focus for IDT is the development of additional integrated communications processors that improve the sustainable data throughput across the PCI bus as the performance demands on our customers' systems increase."

Market trends have increased the bandwidth requirements on the PCI bus. In Ethernet switching applications, where the PCI interface is used as a control bus for managing a switch fabric, system vendors are adding multiple switch fabrics to develop higher-port-count fast Ethernet and gigabit Ethernet platforms. For the wireless access points, the emergence of wireless LAN chip sets, offering five times the bandwidth delivered by the existing 802.11b-based solutions, and the increased demands to accelerate the processing of IPSec algorithms, have driven IDT to enhance the PCI interface to support the transfer of large blocks of data from PCI-based peripherals more efficiently. IDT's new devices offer an increase in system performance of up to 25 percent when compared to previous versions, thus meeting the growing performance requirements in these emerging market segments. By leveraging the processors' system performance enhancements and the broad selection of existing software and development tools, designers of emerging applications can speed their time to market with the release of highly-flexible systems at no additional cost.

The enhanced RC32332 and RC32334 integrated communications processors also include an improved SDRAM controller, enabling a direct connection and easy interoperability with the latest generation of x32 SDRAM devices, as well as a broad selection of discrete components and SO-DIMM memory modules, improving time to market and overall system cost savings. Additionally, the enhanced processors are backward pin and software-compatible with the previous devices to ensure a simple upgrade path for existing customers.

New Design Center Spearheads Performance Enhancement Efforts

IDT's New Jersey design center opened in November 2001 and includes a staff with significant system-level expertise that concentrates on defining the internal architecture of next-generation integrated communications processors and in specifying the functionality of on-chip I/O modules to optimize system bandwidth for specific end applications.

"As the system bandwidth demands for communications applications near the edge of the network increase, a key challenge for the semiconductor supplier becomes the ability to optimize the sustainable bandwidth that can be supported across the on-chip I/O interfaces rather than just integrate off-the-shelf IP modules," said Jeff Lukanc, director of design for IDT's Internetworking Products Division. "IDT's New Jersey design center is a key resource for us to continue to architect integrated solutions that couple communications-specific and generic I/O interfaces with value-added IP to deliver compelling system bandwidth at unparalleled device cost points."

In addition to the New Jersey design center, IDT has global design talent in Atlanta, Georgia; Dallas, Texas; Santa Clara, California; Shanghai, China and Sydney, Australia.

Pricing and Availability

The enhanced RC32332 and RC32334 integrated communications processors are currently sampling, with full production scheduled for later this month. The devices are priced in 10,000 unit quantities, beginning at $19.00 for the 79RC32334 device and $16.00 for the 79RC32332 device. A high-resolution, downloadable photo is located at idt.com.
