The first stock I ever bought was Garan, in the late 1970s. I read many books, and was deeply influenced by Benjamin Graham, David Dreman, and other value investors.

I got the trial subscription to Value Line and it looked to me like Garan was the best bargain. It sold at a lofty 4 PE at the time (I bought it at 6-1/8) and I sold it a couple of years later for a little more than double, as I recollect, when it hit a stratospheric 7 or 8 PE.

I note that if I had just held on all these years, I wouldn't have done so badly.

Joan, Ah, I wish I could take credit for PVA, but that idea came from a client.

I am seeing more growth cos. getting pe ratios of 12 and 13. Admittedly, those came from cuts in the growth rates, but they're still growing.

Value stocks are finally joining in the dirge. I knew when I looked up the "value" funds on Morningstar and they had pe ratios in the mid to high 20s that value had to be in the rose-tinted glasses of the beholder.

Don't mention food stocks or BGR will have a cow. <g>
