>>BUT HE LIED. Instead we ended up with an extreme right wing president.<<

I'm observing a repub. strategy that they have refined and polished starting with bush, and which is now playing out in the California governor's race.

Play hard right wing to the party in the primaries, when most moderates or independents aren't paying attention (Born again, Bob Jones, oil drilling everywhere, etc).

Then shift on a few key issues in the general election, enough to soothe the worried moderates (compassionate conservative, photo ops with the Latinos, etc.). But leave enough crumbs to confuse without sowing too much revolt (Scalia is my model Supreme Court justice).

Now the hard right winger Bill Simon is doing the same in CA. In the primaries, he was Mr. Gun, Mr. Anti-abortion, Mr. Energy producer. Normally, he'd be dead meat here.

But when he slipped in to the nomination, all of a sudden he obfuscates on abortion, comes out strongly against off-shore drilling, and doesn't talk about guns. Anything to win.

And he's lucky to run against a boob like Gray Davis, who has some of the good centrist intentions, but grubs for money like the CEO's grub for stock options, and gives too much payback to the big contributors, like all politicians do these days (the real root of the problems).

So, we could end up with a Nazi Corporate insider in the California governor's office, in the state that is demonstrating the last stand of sanity against the Bush/Cheney axis of big money corruption and favoritism.

Of course, by 2004 the combination of the still to tank further market, economic woes, and vetted shrub/cheney scandals will result in a quite different situation. Before too much damage is done, I hope.
