I don't think we have any obligation to make people who are minorities by choice, rather than by immutable characteristic, free of any embarrassment which their life choices might bring. We have an obligation to allow minorities to practice their beliefs, within reasonable limits, but I think the burden falls on them, not the general population, to accept the consequences of those beliefs. If a child comes to school with a flaming red mohawk haircut, for example, I would fully expect the other children to stare, and make remarks. I personally wouldn't criticize the other students, but would say to the mohawk wearer that he has the free choice to cut his hair that way, but we have the free choice to think it's idiotic.
