Not forcing God upon people who do not believe in a God in a governmental setting is not atheism, it is separation of church and state. Enforcing atheism would be making the pledge illegal. It is not illegal. It is merely improper as foisted upon captive children in a coercive setting by those who represent government.

You mistake the lifting of enforced religious activity, for atheism. It is a common mistake. Those who have been in a tyrannical position often see the lifting of tyranny as terribly despotic thing. The losing of an advantage, even an unjust advantage, often feels "unfair". So it is with the stripping away of government enmeshment in religious artifacts. It feels terribly unjust to those who lose the privilege. It feels like freedom to everyone else.
