Re: California's (and the rest of the US) profligate use of energy is the real rape.

I absolutely agree about the U.S. in aggregate. But it is not a well publicized fact that California ranks 48th of 50 states in per capita electricity consumption.

Furthemore, the "crisis" in the wholesale energy markets in California occurred when demand was only about 60% of the summer peaks. The whole "crisis" was nothing but a contrived swindle.

Re: Anything that slows down such use, including high prices, is a good thing.

I've been a fan of massive increases in gasoline tax to fund public transportation as long as I can remember. We have a really stupid public policy regarding transport modes in this nation.

Of course, the crooks who surround Bush want to do just the opposite, and bankrupt Amtrak so they can steal it and ruin it like the privatizers who managed to destroy British passenger rail service. Here's a story about that sordid episode's ringleader:
