Japan end-June foreign currency reserves at record high after intervention

A Ministry of Finance official said foreign currency reserves rose by $26.5 billion in June to a record high of $446.2 billion due to a series of interventions carried out by the ministry during the month.

The rise was the third consecutive monthly increase in the country's foreign exchange reserves.

The official said the ministry carried out four interventions in June in order to dampen the yen's sharp appreciation against the US dollar.

The ministry added that intervention carried out on June 28 was not reflected in the end-June currency reserves as there is a two-day settlement period for transactions.

The official said the ministry will next month announce how much it spent on the four interventions.
