Interesting... Judging what closing the trade gap did to the dollar in 1985, I would say a 50% decline of the dollar is possible, which would get even worse for the gap to be reversed. US is no longer a manufacturing economy. It will also do wonders to "no inflation". While you don't like "wild prognostications", gold at 500 should not be very far from the truth if the dollar drops in half. 85-87 saw a sharp drop of the dollar as well. This is usually how currencies correct, and the dollar move in the first few months this year looks pretty sharp to me, maybe just the beginning? Currency manipulation is always attempted at this stage and never works.
