Intel had much less exposure the inventory effect of the HP/Compaq merger, so they were affected less.

Dan, I also think that Dell is the sole reason INTC is not hurting as badly as AMD. I think if INTC didn't have an exclusive with Dell, the most prosperous of the PC makers, then its quarter would be as bad as AMD's.

Dan3, re: "Now HPQ has twice the inventory that either company had, and one of the expected benefits of the merger was to consolidate things like inventory to reduce costs."

But wouldn't it need/want something more than the old inventory of either company? So the reduction in inventory would not be to half of the combined but something in the middle. Unless HPQ also wants to drop half its presence on the shelves, backrooms and warehouses? I wonder how they have done with paring/consolidating product lines as I bet there is a lot of redundant products across most segments.

that is not clear. Inventories are normalized to total sales and very often quoted as time to liquidate. For example 2 months worth of inventory. Unless there is a drop of sales due to purchase of compaq the average inventory should not be affected.
