God, augieboo, that piece of arrogance you just laid down was sort of amusing in its breadth of assumptions. Do you have a lot of experience psychoanalyzing entire countries ?

A recent vacation in Europe left me with the impression that they're rather indifferent to what's going on here in our day to day politics, rather than consumed with any sort of inferiority complex or rage at the fact that they_aren't_us. The few snippets I saw of bush on TV over there were rather pathetic at that. Nobody really cared as far as I could tell.

In fact, they seemed to be rather enjoying themselves, were quite friendly, and I don't recall them fawning over me all that much for my outstanding luck at being an American. It seemed that their not worrying too much about chasing our definition of "success" (millions made in stock options via illicit accounting, for example) left them a little more relaxed than you might suspect. And those 11 am cappuccinos on the patio overlooking the water didn't seem so bad either.

augieboo, I think it is you who is being fooled.

You said:
"It's our success, and their inability to deal with their jealousy of that success, that causes the problems. In Europe, they are too arrogant to admit their jealousy, so they criticize our hangnails yet ignore their own gangrenous feet."

What success is that? The Enron success? The phantom "war on terror" success? The running account deficit success? The Worldcom success? The Imclone success? The ANdersen success? The lying conniving cheating wall street analysts, bankers, accountants, SEC success? Which success is that?

Or maybe you are thinking about the fact that 20 years ago when you thought of Europe you thought of individual countries fighting amongst each other but instead now you are looking at the success of one unified Europe and one unified currency?

Which success or lack of one are you talking about?

Cause as long as we are blinded by our own arrogance and greed to our own problems, we will never be able to fix those problems and move forward to a better future for us and the world in general. And last I looked, the US economy was very much dependent of what happens around the world.

"Of course we are going to be isolated in the world, just as Winston Churchill warned us we would back in the late 1940's."

Isolated in an era of globalization is the kiss of death IMO.

"We are the Super Power, and our system works better than any other."

What system is that? The system that created Enron? Or the one that created WorldCom or Imclone or Andersen or the fraud and corruption in wall street analysts, bankers, accountants, SEC?

I'm sorry to tell you this but our system has major fundamental problems, and until we face up to them we can't fix them.

JMHO.
