I asked my kids. None of them knew it was optional. Of course I didn't tell them it was, because I didn't know about "optional" and I would be worried about how "optional" would be treated in our district. None of the teachers I know seem to know it is optional. It does not say in the regs promulgated by our school board that it is "optional". It says we MUST say it one day a week in class- and although it is "allegedly" optional for a teacher to say it, that is not mentioned in our school board directives. Oddly enough. So perhaps the generalization is more general than one might think.
