golds probably rise best after bigbad Dow plunge, AFTER
if it repeats the path in 1929-1932,
we should see all stocks suffer from the liquidation drain throughout the entire stock market
then with the Dow bounce comes a miners bounce also
then with Dow retesting lows, dithering, doubting, with perhaps lower lows, more drifting, lost confidence setting in, etc...

the miners take off, as does gold
Homestake Mining rose about 1000% (10-fold)
but not until after the worst initial drop
with plunges comes a liquidity airpocket of severe magnitude
also, confidence in all things stock-related suffers

here is a good post with reference to 1930's from Drilling II

Crusty:
I'm inclined to agree with you re: the Dow drop/gold soar scenario -- the sharp drop in the general market and USD sure didn't help the gold complex in June.

Here's an interesting chart of the Dow vs Homestake I had bookmarked:

HM experienced the dive in '29, but rose steadily during the ensuing Dow bounce and final decline that lasted until '32. Interestingly, the bulk of HM's gains were made as the market recovered the next several years.
