re: It has little to do with Itanium2 and a lot to do with Hammer, I suppose. Despite what many people think, Hammer is a threat to Xeon, not Itanium2.

I agree that it is not a threat to Itanium but it is more than just a threat to Xeon. Hammers are going to be positioned against p4 line and athlons would be repositioned against celerons. In short it is a threat to ia-32 line.
