I agree with your premise that there was likely manipulation going on, and I appreciate all the nifty stuff about price elasticity, etc., but from my (rather cursory) examination of the NDX it looks like most of the big gainers were the same old suspects. For example, the following were all up in excess of 10% on the day: MSFT, INTC, BEAS, ERICY, SUNW, CIEN. Add to that the fact that the chips and chip equipments posted nearly universal 10%+ gains, and you've got a big rally.
