Where do you think SUNW went wrong verses where IBM went right in the computer business? I think that there has been a long history in SUNW with making investments that were so strategic to the ultimate earnings , i.e. selling hardware. Along the way they have not made any real money on their investments like JAVA, like JINI like applets whereas IBM embraced a wider variety of technologies like INTEL chips, like Microsoft OS's (After losing a great deal of money trying to resist them and develop their own OS) The trouble is as I see it that Sun Microsystem wanted to be a hold-out in not adopting the favorite desktop software and go it alone. They were certainly not allowed into the Microsoft world as they were not allowed acces to source codes which prevented their integration.

The "open" platform approach can possibly still pay off for Sun Microsystems. Will Sun ever become a dominant franchise name like IBM? will they still be around 5 years from now? Will the corporate IT world embrace their technology> Will they spend a premium price for Sun hardware as they have in the past?

I believe the answer to these questions is a resounding "yes" and here's why:

1) Sun has recognized the need to partner with other firms to fill in their deficiencies, example Hitachi for storage.

2) Sun's software is getting better. They have had a poor acceptance of their integrated software offerings and now they seem to be getting it together.

3) Service has become a very important are that is wanted by the very large purchasers of hardware. I believe that Sun Micro knows this and are working on getting their best and brightest personnel involved with this vital are of the business

4)Committment to R & D is high. There is a real benefit here to the potential buyer. They want to know that Sun will be there to upgrade the products that they purchase today with newer and faster chips and technologies and finaly,

5) Recognition that the telecomm and dot.com business is as dead as a doornail, that they need to diversify ing other markets for their hardware software and integrated products.

In all I still believe that the future is bright and that they will make their numbers, and "kick ass" in the future.
