I think the problem comes when you sacrifice the lives of OTHERS, and then tell them it is no big deal- whether they agree with you, or not. I have always been totally behind people sacrificing themselves in whatever manner they wish and whenever they wish- they just can't take anyone else along.

That is the problem. I have no problem with the believers profoundly sacrificing their own selves. None at all.

But what is it for the rational humanist? Can it be anything other than an act of madness? Of stupidity?

I cannot understand why people cannot appreciate how a humanist could give up his life in the best interests of humanity or of those he loves, just like anyone else. He wouldn't do it for the virgins, for sure, but why not for his family or his country or the future of the human race?

And if a Christian gives up his life to gain heaven, is that really such a noble thing, an "act of faith and morality"?
