You can't imagine a higher purpose, or values absent your system of belief which includes god. At least that seemed to be what you were saying. You could not imagine giving up your life for others, absent god. You cannot imagine the universe and how it might have been created, absent god. You said that. If you meant it, that means you cannot come anywhere near empathizing with me. I don't blame you for it. But if what you said is true, in your last paragraph, that we are miles and miles apart. Which is fine. I can't imagine believing in god. But I can understand why it would be nice to do it for some people. I do hear the arguments people give for their faith. For me there is always an irrational foundation lurking in it, which they accept and I do not, but I understand, if they accept that irrationality, how everything can make sense in that context. What I am trying to say to you is that you do not seem to be able to get past whatever the irrationality is (for you) in the foundation of non-faith, in order to understand how the belief structure of the non-faithful is built. I hope this makes sense. I was not trying to be combative. I was just surprised that you seem totally unable to see how higher values and greater purposes could easily exist for those who do not believe in god.
