I was reading your thoughts about teachers a few minutes ago. I too, have been surprised and put off by a couple of things during the course of my kids' public school educations. The first was a lack of articulateness (often coming through most glaringly in missives sent home to parents), but more disturbing than that was the sense I got from some teachers that they knew more about children, any child, than parents did. It was a patronizing mindset I've seen in other professions (doctors and shrinks come to mind) that can't be good for kids.
