I knew that would rustle a feather or two so, by way of explanation: it's just that as you say(and I agree), the "under God" phrase is "...harmless... ." Hence, I'm not concerned should it remain in, even though the minister who wrote the original pledge was perhaps trying to stay on the safe side of the constitution. I was born in '54, and to me, this which has only been around for my lifetime doesn't quite qualify as "national" Heritage. I remember in grade school having trouble remembering to include that phrase when we gave the pledge as a class. I think its inclusion made the pledge awkward to recite. Perhaps this was because I'd read it in its prior form, only to doubt my memory when corrected during class recitals?

And yes, that fellow who brought this issue to court is certainly desperate, making such a mountain of a molehill as he has, IMO.
