Excuse me? Hafez al Assad and King Hussein certainly did leave office feet first. Gaddafi and the Emir of Kuwait are still in office. None of these gentlemen (I use the term loosely, except wrt to King Hussein) ever retired. Nor will Arafat. He might be deposed, but if he is left alive he will spend all his energies scheming and undermining the new regime. If he should be forced to "retire", his successor will insist on a distant retirement.

The only retirements the Arab world has seen is when a son forces out his father, as happened in Bahrain.
