We can know that the Grand Canyon is just a hole in the rocks created by a river and still be in awe of it.

True. But then that brings up the question of why we regard it with awe. The rattlesnakes just accept it for what it is. In other words, it calls attention to those other qualities of the human spirit, such as appreciation for beauty, for the voice of Josh Groban, for the aroma of lilacs, for the caress of a loved one's hand.

Do you suppose that all of these thrills and sensations that elevate our spirit are mere matters of genes and neurons doing their thing? Not a very uplifting thought!

Have you dived on a coral reef? That is one thrill that I must sadly concede that I will never experience. (Not in this life, anyway -- gg).

I don't watch the Animal channel enough. Every time I do catch it I enjoy what I see. We are always being astonished at how observant our Goldens are of everything little thing we do, and the clever ways they have of getting what they want. And the Golden breed is not known for high IQ's.
