There are many plausible explanations for this trend, but one of the least mentioned is that American men, in the face of a family court system hopelessly stacked against them, have subconsciously launched a "marriage strike."

There used to be a time when women stayed home and raised the children and the husband/father went to work to support them. In the mid 60's the use of the pill as birthcontrol became widespread. by the end of the 60's abortion was legalized. Vets returning from VietNam, an illegal war, continued smoking pot and met up with likeminded folks creating the hippie counterculture and opening the door for women's lib. People had the choice not to have so many children, women's lib gave homewreckers license to go break up happy homes with the result that although 1970 was the year of the greatest number of marriages ever in this country, 1982 had the largest number of divorces ever. So now it takes two to support one family who take their precious children and dump them at places not fit for pitbulls. And the result is these menboys, who are not subconciously afraid of marriage, but are in fact afraid to leave Mama who was never there for them.
