I was very careful not to offer an opinion, so as not to reveal my point of view on the possible event. All I offered was one alternative scenario, out of perhaps millions of possible scenarios. For what it's worth, I'd like to see the USA maintain its global leadership position for a few thousand millennia. However history tells us that no society, no form of government, no one nationality has ever prevailed forever. Indeed, the Roman Empire crumbled, the Greek Empire crumbled, the Egyptians crumbled, et al... And so it likely shall come to pass that the USA "Empire" will someday crumble. As a student of history, it is interesting to note that all prior societies that have ultimately collapsed did so from within their own parameters and within their own cycle. The cycle begins by creating something where once there was nothing. The society successfully defends itself from outside influences or attacks. The society becomes admired and imitated elsewhere. The society, enamored of its own success, becomes an Empire and slowly falls into moral and political decay. Lastly the Empire falls into ruin, no longer revered elsewhere, and quietly evolves into a new society, but sans a leadership position. It seems to me that if we attack without provocation we shall lose any creditability we have gained. Perhaps you are correct, and perhaps you are not. Do not make the mistake of listening to the Arab rhetoric that you read in the newspapers. Arab nations often say one thing, and actually want something different. Sadam is the most feared individual in the Arab world, bar none. Sadam has no real belief in Islamic principles or any other religion for that matter. Sadam cannot be controlled by the religious leaders within the Arabic world, which is why they fear him. The only reason that Sadam is still in power is precisely because of the fear he creates. Syria and Iran, along with some smaller countries would not hesitate to spread their influence across all of the Arabian Peninsula given the opportunity to do so, and they would do so by any means possible, including military options. So, with Sadam in power, there exists an obstacle for Syria and Iran to extend their dominance. Saudi Arabia, while indeed a wealthy country, is a weak country in political terms. The House of Saud is actually the House of Cards. They stay in power only as long as the religious leaders make it possible. So, if the USA takes out Sadam, they have to replace him with someone equally powerful but less friendly to global terrorists. Not an impossible task, but certainly daunting, which is likely why everyone in the various governments around the world walks like the streets are paved with eggshells. The problem could be easily resolved simply by having Sadam renounce terrorism, and giving up his attempts to develop weapons of mass destruction. But those events are not likely to happen, which is why the rest of the world must now consider removing Sadam from his seat of power. One last thing. The Arabs hide behind the ruse that they hate Israel because of the Palestinian issues. Don't believe it. Given any chance at all, any of the other Arab countries would mercilessly pound any Palestinian state. The Israelis are detested because of their successes. The USA is detested because of assistance given to Israel over the years. But given their druthers, the Arabs much prefer a peaceful Israel to a powerful Palestine, which by the way, is historically aligned with Syria and Iran for many hundreds of years; thus the preference for a weak Palestine rather than a strong one.
