But saying "the year of our Lord" is different.

That is an excellent observation. Some will say it is nitpicking, but I think not. Generally we all tend to pooh-pooh strict readings of the Constitution, if the point being made is going against us. If we favor the point, then we join right in with meticulous reading of each and every word, comma, capitalization, etc.

In this case I think the "our" is most significant in attempting to see into the minds of the framers. That is simply not a choice of words that would be made by persons steadfastly determined to bar any acknowledgement of God by the state which they themselves are creating.
