Dan, Re: "Now, can Itanium index a production database? Return a complex query in a production database? How is it with the 98% of all code out there that was developed in-house, by in-house developers for business critical in-house applications?"

I'm *so* glad you asked. Look at these links.

But don't take HP's word for it. Here's what Johns Hopkins University had to say.

"The Sloan Digital Sky Survey project, a joint endeavor with Johns Hopkins University and other institutions, has been expanding its database catalog to about 300 million celestial objects, and the positive effects of large memory support and increased processing power were seen very clearly in the first generation Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition-based Itanium® server. With HP's Windows-based Itanium® platform configured with 28 GB of memory, we were able to perform calculations in ten days that previously would have taken half a year. During testing, the 64-bit Itanium-based server processed data at 350MB per second, which was astounding. Johns Hopkins is looking forward to even more amazing performance from the Windows-based Itanium 2 systems from HP. We're considering porting our entire database to the next-generation server."
