How about the OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN for the administration DIRECTLY telling the mainstream media, "You better watch what you say".
Ok...so that's not "covert". I'll go with overt manipulation.
And it's obviously had an effect. Mainstream, corporate media now shows nothing more than blatant servitude because their backbone has been compromised.
