On the net, yes. Even with emoticons, what can be portrayed is limited. And most people only know one or or three.

In real life with a real person there is all that additional information conveyed by tone of voice, facial exprssions, etc.

And still we often get it wrong.

I just remembered that I do sometimes put 'lol.' Usually when I've actually laughed, or at least giggled.

Exclamation marks serve the purpose too, sometimes.
