Hi Thomas,

Truth and fiction were fungible in Twain's writing. Notoriously, when he was a reporter for the paper in Virginia City, NV, he ran a series of shocking stories about the heinous murder of a family of Anglo settlers in the Sierra foothills. It was a sensation in Virginia City, which was about 50 miles from where the "murders" occurred. The readership of newspaper swelled and the story was amplified on for over a month. A real moneymaker for the paper

It all ended briefly thereafter when a rival newspaper determined that Twain had fabricated the entire incident out of nothing more than his fertile imagination.
