Well, I certainly wouldn't call it "sheer idiocy" and would love to see you argue that point with Wallerstein. He has a reputation as a very aggressive debator.

As for the point, it's definitely a stretch but one that's in the service of a point. You can, very easily, argue that the outcome of WWI almost preordained WWII, given the peace terms imposed on Germany. Thus, the two are connected. If, however, you don't like that bit of stretch, perhaps you don't like the larger point.

As for whether it's scholarly research, research involves advancing inferences, connections, whatever. And Wallerstein has always done that in grand style. Perhaps that kind of inference is not your cup of tea. I have to admit I have a hard time with it. But I learn from trying to think it through. If you don't, just relax.

So, it's only an argument. Not something to bust a button over.
